Mathematics:

Everything I have ever been fascinated with has been because it was an instance of one particular phenomena: sometimes, a collection of objects which interact with each other by a set of simple rules, will spiral into macroscopic complexity. In fact, as I grew older and began to realize it was in fact this phenomenon which fascinated me and not necessarily its specific instances, I realized almost everything, in essence, was a product of that phenomenon. Down to the nature of the universe. I realized this maybe halfway through highschool, and it wasn't until I had graduated that I learned about complexity science. Until then I didn't know other people had thought about this or pursued it scientifically, and I was more excited than I can say to realize there was already so much to learn (at the same time I was unquestionably jealous that I would not have the pleasure of in fact pioneering this new field).
